Exploring Color — Independent Study

A self-paced photography course by Cheryl Machat Dorskind

Color evokes time, place, and emotion. It can become the subject itself. Exploring Color invites you to look closely, understand color relationships, and use them with intention in your photographs.

Work through four illustrated lessons at your own pace. Photograph familiar places with new attention, experiment with light and color, and build a twelve-image portfolio that reflects what you discover.

Digital download — final sale. This course is non-refundable, except where required by law. If you have trouble accessing your download, please contact cheryl@cherylmachatdorskind.com.

What you will explore

  • Color relationships, light, and white balance
  • Observation, symbolism, and personal color response
  • Line, shape, pattern, texture, and tonal design
  • Expressive color, night photography, and abstraction

Your course includes

  • A 29-page illustrated workbook with photographs by Cheryl Machat Dorskind
  • Four practical assignments and an optional advanced section
  • Self-review checklists, knowledge questions with model answers, and a portfolio rubric
  • An offline course companion with a personalized PDF Certificate of Completion creator
  • A course overview that can be supplied to a school or sponsoring organization

How it works: Download the course package, extract the ZIP, and begin with the workbook or Start-Here.html. Keep your photographs and written reflections in your own folder. After completing the activities, use the companion to record your declaration and create your certificate.

Time: Plan approximately 14–18 hours, including portfolio assembly. This is an estimate; work at your own pace.

Materials: A digital camera or phone, a way to view and organize photographs, and a notebook or text document. Basic editing tools are helpful. The offline certificate tool requires a desktop browser with JavaScript enabled.

Independent study: This edition includes no live meetings, personal teaching support, instructor critiques, or grading. The certificate records self-reported completion; it is not an assessed professional qualification. Schools determine their own approval and evidence requirements.

This independent-study edition is separate from Exploring Color with personalized review.

Keep noticing, keep exploring.
